History

Where do we come from?

Born as Chevra Kadisha in 1894, the first activities since its creation focused on developing the necessary conditions to observe the Jewish tradition. One of its first actions was the foundation of a community cemetery. This action entailed the legitimation of the Jewish presence as a constituent minority of the Argentinean society. Soon, its activities grew, multiplied and diversified with the successive immigration flows. As from the 20s, with the increase of Jewish population in the country and its progressive integration to society, AMIA became the space where all the Jewish people of Argentina could come together and participate. Its historical house in Pasteur 633, which opened in 1945, reflected the drive of its development.

Publicly known as the “stem institution”, and the center in which all organized community activity took place, it was the core where important initiatives, such as the Central Council for Jewish Education (known by its Spanish name, Consejo Central de Educación Judía), the Federation of Jewish Communities in Argentina (Spanish name, Federación de Comunidades Judías de la Argentina), and the Tzedaka Foundation, among others, were born. In 1994, to commemorate the centennial of its creation, AMIA organized a series of celebrations that were interrupted on July 18th. Murderous hands placed a bomb at the iconic building of the Jewish Community of Argentina.

The memory of the 85 people who were killed, the hundreds of injured and the survivors of this massive slaughter, remains alive. The bomb mandated the conception of a new time. The creative drive of a community willing to preserve the heritage of a cultural tradition that honors life and prioritizes justice settled on the debris. In 1999, AMIA’s new building was inaugurated on Pasteur 633.

Several institutions work actively within its walls to go on building the history of a community together. AMIA, a centennial organization whose actions are driven by the notions of inclusion and pluralism in Argentinean society, takes on the challenge of working towards continuous improvement. It aims at increasing the impact and results of its actions through a dynamic and innovative approach.
